Road Accidents Claim Over 40,000 Annually – FRSC

During activities to mark the 7th United Nations Global Road Safety Week, the Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC ) stated that over 40,000 people die every year as a result of road crashes in Nigeria.
This is according to a statement by Corps Marshal FRSC, Dauda Biu on Monday, May 15.
Dauda maintained that road crash is the main cause of death and causing disabilities according to statistics.
He asserted that globally, 1.3 million people are killed due to road accidents and 50 million get injured every year.
Dauda maintained that between the ages 5-29, road crashes are the greatest threat to people, as there is always one in every four deaths occurring in the age bracket
He stated that the United Nations had come up with a global plan for the decade of action for road safety 2022-2030, which was a target to minimise road deaths and injuries.
Dauda maintained that the Road Safety Corps is partnering with the World Health Organisation ( WHO ), the Federal Ministry of Health ( FMH ) and the United Nations Decade of Action on Road Safety and Injury Prevention ( UNDARSIP ).
The command forces stated that the 7th United Nations Global Road Safety Week is focusing on sustainable transport with the slogan #RethinkMobility, which necessitates the urgent need to shift to walking, cycling and using public transport.
