2027: Jonathan’s possible comeback unsettles APC
By Monday Peters, Abuja
ABUJA — Tension is mounting within the All Progressives Congress,APC, over speculation that former President Goodluck Jonathan may join the 2027 presidential race on the NDC’s platform.
The rumour gained traction in recent weeks after several APC chieftains from the South-South and North-Central secretly urging Jonathan to contest. Supporters argue that his experience, national profile, and perceived acceptability across regions make him a strong candidate.
That possibility has split the APC between those who see him as a unifying figure and those who view his potential candidacy as a threat to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the race.
However, Jonathan himself has not confirmed or denied interest. In public appearances, he has focused on peace-building and regional development, avoiding direct comments in 2027.
Jonathan’s rumored 2027 bid has exposed fault lines in the APC between loyalty to long-time party members and the push for a candidate with wider national appeal to save the almost jeopardized economy.
