2027: Tinubu Top Ministers to Resign, Governors to Shift Support to Jonathan Presidential Race
By Monday Peters, Abuja
ABUJA — In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, several top ministers in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet are set to resign their positions, according to sources within the presidency. The resignations are expected to precede a coordinated shift of support toward former President Goodluck Jonathan’s anticipated presidential campaign.
Multiple senior officials confirmed that at least five cabinet members are waiting for Jonathan’s flag up to submit formal notices of their intention to step down from their appointments and the All Progressives Congress, APC.
According to top hints some ministers, who hold key portfolios, are aligning with a coalition of state governors seeking a return to the political platform that governed Nigeria from 2011 to 2015.
The governors, drawn from both the North and South-South geopolitical zones, have reportedly concluded consultations to withdraw support from the incumbent administration and endorse Jonathan as the consensus candidate for the upcoming presidential race. The move follows a series of closed-door meetings held in Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kaduna over the past two months.
Political analysts describe the development as the most significant cabinet-level defection since the formation of the current administration. The anticipated resignations are expected to trigger a cabinet reshuffle and alter the balance of power within the ruling party’s structure at the federal level.
State House sources indicate that the decision by the ministers is linked to policy disagreements and strategic calculations regarding regional representation in the 2027 electoral calculus. The governors cite the need for national cohesion and continuity of economic programs initiated during Jonathan’s previous tenure as central to their decision.
Preparations for the formal announcement are underway, with a joint press briefing expected to be held in Abuja once the resignations are processed. The development sets the stage for a competitive presidential contest as political alignments continue to shift ahead of party primaries.
However, the Jonathan’s camp has not issued an official statement but sources close to the former president confirm that consultations with political stakeholders across all six geopolitical zones are ongoing.
