FG Refutes Salary Increase For Elected Officials, Appointees, N’Assembly & Judicial Officers

By Sola Omoniyi, Lagos
Following the rumour of a 114% salary increase for elected officials, appointees, National Assembly and Judicial Officers, the Federal Government of Nigeria has denied the information and tagged it as fake news.
According to the report, there is no law for a 114% salary increase in the constitution of Nigeria.
Paragraph 32 (d) of part 1 to the third schedule as well as sections 70,84,111 & 124 of the 1999 constitution has in the years 2000 and 2007 recommended remuneration for political office holders.
However, the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission can recommend an increase in wages to the president, and the president in council with his minister, has the power to approve or reject the proposal.
The Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission was established by Decree 49 of 1989 and later amended by Decree 98 of 1993.
Recall, in the year 2009, RMARC attempted to review salaries increase from 2009 to 2015, but failed, because NASS and 36 state assemblies couldn’t pass the bill.
The last review of salaries and allowances for elected officials was done in 2008.
However, according to the report, there is nothing in the law approving 114% increase in Salary for elected officials.
