By Sola Omoniyi, Lagos
Not less than 75,000 hectares of rice farm has been destroyed by a bird in Kebbi state over the weekend.
The development has resulted in at least 100 farmers suffering losses over their rice farms invaded by quelea birds in Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi state.
According to the rice farmers, the dangerous bird destroyed about 75,000 hectares of rice.
It was reported that the birds migrated from the Niger Republic, a neighbouring country.
As of the time of this report, Kebbi state has been the only state affected by the menace caused by the birds.
Experts in agriculture are however advising farmers in the Northwest and Northeast to be on the lookout for the invading birds.
The expert stated that the only way to fight the menace of the quelea birds is to produce pest repellent that works without causing any damage to the crops.
