‘Govt Is Doing Nothing About Hardship In Nigeria’ — Singer Zlatan
By Micheal Chukwuebuka
Popular Nigerian rapper, Omoniyi Temidayo Raphael, popularly known as Zlatan Ibile, has voiced strong criticism of the Nigerian government over its failure to address the worsening economic hardship in the country.
In an interview with Madame Joyce in the UK, Zlatan, who rose to fame with hit songs like “Zanku (Leg Work)” and is known for his energetic performances and street-inspired lyrics, expressed concern about the state of everyday life in Nigeria. “We are used to it, suffering and smiling, that’s how it has always been and the government isn’t doing anything about it,” he said.
Reacting to British rapper Dave’s satirical take on Nigeria’s flashy clubbers juxtaposed with beggars outside the clubs, Zlatan lamented that hardship and inequality have become a normalized part of daily life. He further noted that some beggars appear entitled, depending on alms instead of exploring productive avenues to improve their livelihoods.
Zlatan urged street beggars to seek meaningful ventures that could provide sustainable income and empower them to rise above the struggles of poverty. The rapper, who continues to influence youth culture in Nigeria, stressed that while the government has a role to play, individual effort and self-initiative remain crucial.
