In the devastating collision, hundreds of market traders at the popular Oje-Beere fruit market were left in tears as numerous tricycles became trapped beneath the tanker. Panic swept through the crowd, with many fleeing for fear of an explosion or fuel spillage.
The Oyo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mrs Rosemary Alo, confirmed the casualties, stating that two of those initially hospitalised later died while receiving treatment. According to a statement from the Corps, the deceased comprised three adult males and one adult female.
Mrs Alo added that a post-accident assessment had been conducted in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, Mapo Division, where the Divisional Police Officer also confirmed the additional fatalities. She said efforts were ongoing to manage the aftermath of the crash, while investigations into its cause continued.
The accident occurred on Bere-Oje Road in the state capital.
