The arrest of a Nigerian man in Brooklyn, New York, by U.S. immigration authorities sparked protests that later turned violent, leading to multiple arrests and minor injuries.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that Chidozie Wilson Okeke was detained during a “targeted enforcement operation,” describing him as a non-citizen with prior arrests for assault and drug possession.

Officials claimed he resisted arrest refusing to exit his vehicle, allegedly trying to use it against officers, and becoming physically combative. DHS stated officers used “the minimum amount of force necessary.”

Okeke was later taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center after requesting medical attention. Authorities said he acted erratically at the hospital before being cleared.

Tensions rose outside the facility as protesters gathered, with videos showing crowds chanting and expressing anger.

DHS alleged that some demonstrators turned violent, damaging vehicles and assaulting officers, leaving a few with minor injuries.

As the situation escalated, protesters attempted to block law enforcement from leaving. The New York Police Department (NYPD) stepped in, issuing dispersal orders, but clashes broke out, resulting in several arrests.

Those detained may face charges such as obstruction, resisting arrest, and criminal mischief as officials emphasized that assaulting law enforcement is a serious felony offense.
