By Joseph Bienbo, Warri
A Warri-based group, the Justice and Equity Movement, JEM, has declared support for Chief Sheriff Mulade, the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, aspirants for the Warri Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives. urging party faithful and constituents to massively support and mobilise for his victory at primaries and the final elections.
The group, in a statement issued over the weekend, said it was throwing its weight behind Mulade, citing his track record of advocacy and community development in the Niger Delta.
Speaking on behalf of the group, its President, Mr. Preye Telemone Isaac, said the decision followed consultations with stakeholders and an assessment of aspirants vying for the position.
“We believe Chief Sheriff Mulade has the capacity, experience, and grassroots connection needed to effectively represent the people of Warri Federal Constituency at the National Assembly,” Isaac said.
The group called for fairness and equity in the political leadership of Warri Federal Constituency. It noted that the constituency comprises three ethnic groups and said the view that the seat belongs exclusively to the Itsekiri as a birthright is undemocratic.
“There must be an effort to correct the current political imbalance. That is the only path to lasting peace and stability in Warri Federal Constituency,” the group stated. It described Mulade, the NDC aspirant, as a unifier who would provide practical and inclusive representation for the entire constituency.
He added that the group would mobilize support across the constituency to ensure Mulade’s emergence as the preferred candidate.
Chief Mulade is a well-known environmental rights advocate and convener of the Center for Peace and Environmental Justice, CEPEJ.
