Delta CP Seeks Stronger Partnership with State Assembly to Enhance Security
By Chukwunonso Eric, Warri.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has called for stronger collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the Delta State House of Assembly to bolster security, strengthen community policing, and address emerging criminal threats across the state.
CP Oyeniyi made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Delta State House of Assembly in Asaba as part of ongoing stakeholder engagements aimed at fostering partnerships for improved public safety and security.
Speaking during the visit, the Commissioner said the engagement was in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, which emphasizes active collaboration with key stakeholders in advancing community policing initiatives nationwide. He described the State Legislature as a critical partner in efforts to ensure peace and security in Delta State.
The Police Commissioner specifically sought legislative support in strengthening laws that would facilitate the swift prosecution of drug traffickers and other criminal offenders. He noted that while many crimes in riverine and rural communities are localized, they continue to pose significant threats to security and development.
According to him, rural communities remain vital to the nation’s economy and deserve greater security attention and protection.
CP Oyeniyi also reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to professionalism, accountability, and service delivery. He assured lawmakers that the Delta State Command under his leadership would continue to uphold discipline while safeguarding lives, property, and the fundamental rights of residents.
“The Command remains committed to diligent service and sustained collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the State,” he stated.
Responding, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, welcomed the Commissioner to the state and expressed confidence in his ability to effectively discharge his responsibilities.
The Speaker noted that the visit had further strengthened the confidence of the Assembly in the Police and its dedication to ensuring public safety. He assured the Commissioner of the Legislature’s continued support, adding that the cordial relationship enjoyed with previous Police leadership would be maintained.
Guwor pledged the Assembly’s readiness to work closely with the Police in tackling pressing security challenges, including drug abuse, cultism, and other forms of criminality across the state.
He further assured that the House would continue to provide the necessary legislative backing and cooperation needed to support the Command’s security objectives, while encouraging deeper collaboration between both institutions in the interest of peace, security, and sustainable development.
The visit ended with a mutual commitment by the Police and the Legislature to strengthen cooperation and work together towards ensuring a safer and more secure Delta State.
