Veteran maritime journalist and Publisher of Shipping World Magazine, Elder Asu Beks, has been honoured as an African Maritime Journalism Icon of Excellence at the 11th edition of the Face of Independence Heroes Awards 2026 in Lagos.

The award ceremony, held on Saturday, October 24, at Eko Hotel and Suites, recognised Beks for his longstanding contributions to maritime journalism and the development of Nigeria’s shipping and port industries.

Beks, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Maritime Media Limited, dedicated the honour to Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, his colleagues in the maritime media and journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty.

In his acceptance speech, the veteran journalist commended Diri for his commitment to maritime development, particularly the establishment of a ministry dedicated to marine and climate-related affairs in Bayelsa State.

He said the initiative demonstrated a commitment to advancing the maritime sector and aligned with broader national development objectives under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Beks also acknowledged the contributions of maritime journalists who continue to inform the public, promote accountability and report developments in Nigeria’s shipping, ports and marine industries.

Reflecting on his career, he traced his journey in maritime journalism to his days at Concord newspaper, noting that more than three decades in the profession had strengthened his passion for specialised reporting and the growth of the maritime sector.

He paid tribute to journalists who died while carrying out their professional duties, describing their sacrifices as a lasting reminder of the courage, dedication and commitment required to uphold the principles of journalism.

The Face of Independence Heroes Awards, now in its 11th edition, celebrates individuals whose achievements and contributions promote excellence, cultural development and national progress.

Beks’ recognition underscores his enduring influence in maritime journalism and highlights the importance of specialised media reporting in promoting transparency, accountability and sustainable development within Nigeria’s maritime industry.
