The Commissioner of police Delta State, Mr Abaniwonda Olufemi who said, he was aware of the alleged sponsored protest in Ughelli North LGA, wished to debunk the rumour currently circulating on social media that Policemen shot at a Peaceful Protesters.

According to a press statement issued and signed by the police public relations officer, Mr Bright Edafe, Delta State Command Asaba, on 6th May 2024, said, some Oteri community members approached the Area Commander in Ughelli and requested that Policemen on the express road be withdrawn, unfortunately the Area commander declined and told them that the deployment was in compliance with the directive of the Commissioner of Police on the need to ensure police presence in that area to prevent kidnapping and other crimes.

The statement read in part, “Surprisingly, the women from the community in their numbers forcefully stormed the Area command in a violent protest, beating up a policeman in the process but they were promptly dispersed with the use of tear gas.

Meanwhile, Olufemi also stressed that, for record purposes the Command wished to reiterate that nobody was shot during the protest, but the police rightly used tear gas to disperse the protesters.

“The report making rounds that Policemen shot at peaceful protesters is false and should be completely disregarded.

The Commissioner of Police, Olufemi however admonished the police officers to remain resolute and calm and should not succumb to pressure from any quarters because they are met to protect life and property which is the constitutional mandate of the Police.
