ASUU Joins Nationwide Strike as Organised Labour Takes Stand

By Stephen Asaba-ase

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared its support for the ongoing nationwide strike initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). The strike, which began on Monday, is a response to the federal government’s failure to meet the unions’ minimum wage demands.

In a statement, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke directed university lecturers across the country to join the strike, emphasizing the union’s affiliation with the congress. The statement read:

“Following the NLC’s declaration of an indefinite strike action starting from June 3, 2024, due to the government’s failure to renegotiate minimum wage and reverse the electricity tariff hike, we hereby direct our branches to participate in the strike action. Branch chairpersons are to mobilize all members to join the strike. Together, we stand in solidarity.”

This move by ASUU demonstrates the union’s commitment to the collective demands of organized labour, amplifying the call for fair wages and better working conditions.
