The Benue State Police Command has reportedly dismissed a constable identified as Belasa Iyange for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl who was in detention.

Congress gathered that while in detention at the Divisional Police headquarters, Tse Agbaragba, Konshisha Local Government Area of the state, the constable, who disguised to be assisting the girl went into the female cell, took her into an office and had sexual intercourse with her against her consent.

It was learned that the underage girl reported the case to the Divisional Police Officer. This led to the arrest of the constable and the case was brought to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Makurdi.

The constable is already facing prosecution at the Magistrate’s Court, Makurdi, capital of Benue State.

However, police authorities dismissed the constable as he faced litigation.

The CP, Mr Bartholomew Onyeka, confirmed the incident on Tuesday in Makurdi, stressing that the Force was a very disciplined organisation.

According to the CP, “The dismissed constable committed the crime at Tse Agbaragba Divisional Police Station, Konshisha LGA.

“Police is a disciplined organ and it is the statutory organ responsible for crime and fighting crime and management. Such persons are not allowed to stay in the system. He was not only dismissed, he is also facing prosecution.”
