The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has called for stronger collaboration between the Police and transport stakeholders across the state to combat crime and improve public safety.

The strategic security meeting, held on Monday, May 11, 2026, brought together key transport operators and stakeholders as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen intelligence gathering and crime prevention within the transport sector.

The engagement, which followed the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, focused on enhancing cooperation between law enforcement agencies and transport unions whose operations directly affect public security.

Among those in attendance were representatives of Local Government Chairmen, officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), the Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association (COMTOA), Tipper Union leaders, transport company operators, and other stakeholders in the transport industry.

Speaking during the meeting, CP Yemi Oyeniyi commended the transport unions for their continued support and partnership with the Police Command. He noted that the Command had recorded significant operational successes through intelligence gathering and sustained stop-and-search operations across Delta State.

The Police Commissioner further disclosed that Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers had been directed to maintain regular engagements with transport stakeholders within their jurisdictions to deepen cooperation and strengthen community policing efforts.

According to the CP, the meeting was aimed at educating transport operators on evolving criminal strategies and encouraging vigilance within motor parks and transport systems.

He warned that criminal elements often exploit public transportation networks to move arms, illicit drugs, and even ransom payments associated with kidnapping operations.

CP Oyeniyi therefore urged transport operators and park managers not to allow criminals use their facilities as safe channels for illegal activities. He stressed the importance of maintaining proper passenger documentation and accurate manifest records containing passengers’ phone numbers and addresses, noting that such information would significantly aid security operations and criminal investigations.

The Commissioner also expressed concern over the activities of touts and individuals with questionable backgrounds operating within motor parks. He discouraged the practice of picking passengers along roadsides instead of designated parks, stating that the trend exposes commuters to security risks and makes monitoring difficult for security agencies.

He appealed to stakeholders to provide timely and credible information to the Police while ensuring that illicit drug activities and other criminal acts are not tolerated within parks and loading points.

Speaking on behalf of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the State Chairman, Chief Francis Arhiyor, highlighted some operational challenges faced by transport operators, including resistance by passengers to parcel inspections and refusal to provide accurate details for manifest documentation.

He called for increased public sensitization through radio, television, and social media campaigns to educate the public on the importance of passenger identification and parcel checks in strengthening security.

Also speaking during the meeting, Comrade Nnamdi Odiwe, representing the Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government Area, raised concerns over the growing number of unauthorised roadside parks. He stressed the need for stronger collaboration between government authorities and the Police to monitor illegal parks and improve security oversight across the state.

In his concluding remarks, CP Yemi Oyeniyi assured stakeholders that the engagement would be sustained as part of broader strategies aimed at reducing crime and improving safety across Delta State.

He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to visibility policing on roads and waterways, adding that residents would continue to witness increased police presence throughout the state.

The Commissioner expressed appreciation to all stakeholders for their contributions and commitment to maintaining peace and security, describing the meeting as productive and beneficial to the Command’s ongoing anti-crime efforts.

The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe.
