By Chukwunonso Eric, Warri.
The Delta State Police Command has denied allegations linking its operatives to a shooting incident that reportedly occurred at the Ogbilọ area of Ogbeogonogo Market in Asaba on May 6, 2026.
The clarification followed the circulation of a viral video on social media in which bystanders allegedly accused police officers of shooting a young man identified as “Aboy.”
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Command stated that no police operative was involved in any shooting incident in the area on the said date, describing the allegations as unverified and misleading.
According to the statement, there is currently no evidence connecting the Police to the attack, noting further that the victim’s associate, who was reportedly taken away by unidentified gunmen during the incident, is not in custody at any detention facility under the Delta State Police Command.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim, popularly known as “Aboy,” sustained gunshot injuries and is presently receiving medical treatment. Police sources also disclosed that the victim is suspected to be involved in cult-related activities within the state and had reportedly been shot during a cult-related clash about four years ago.
The Command further disclosed that the unidentified individual who was allegedly taken away from the scene may have been abducted, adding another dimension to the ongoing investigation.
In response to the public concern generated by the viral video, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has directed the Command’s Anti-Cultism Unit to commence a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Police assured residents that the investigation would be thorough and transparent, while urging members of the public to provide credible information that could assist ongoing inquiries.
Residents with useful information were advised to contact the Command Control Room on 08036684974 or the Complaint Response Unit via 09155570008 or 09011112311.
The Command reiterated its commitment to combating cultism and violent crimes across Delta State and urged the public to verify facts before drawing conclusions regarding sensitive security matters.
