By Abdullahi Alhassan, Kaduna
In pursuance of its commitment to promote inclusion of all, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Equal Access International (Nigeria), has presented to the public a local action plan (LAP) on the inclusion of women in issues of peace and security by the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325.
The LAP which was launched for three Kaduna local government areas of Chikun, Kajuru and Jema’a is designed to serve as a guide for government, civil society organisations,community-based organisations, religious leaders, traditional rulers and other stakeholders engaged in peace, security and humanitarian efforts in the areas.
At the public presentation, the country director of Equal Access International, Dr Maji Peterx, said the three selected local government areas have suffered persistent security challenges over the years, ranging from ethno-religious conflicts, farmer/herder disputes and banditry.
He said security is everybody’s business thus women should not be excluded if we want to achieve an all-encompassing solution to the challenges it portends.
Bar Rebecca Sako-John the Permanent Commissioner, of the Kaduna State Peace Commission lends her voice to the conversation by thanking Equal Access for the LAP document and further reiterating the significance of including women.
Agwom Kufana who was also present at the public presentation emphasized the need for all hands to be on deck on the issue of safety and thanked Equal Access for the choice of Kajuru considering the insecurity experienced in the local government area.
