The Christian Association of Nigeria has demanded legalization of firearms for Nigerian citizens to defend themselves to avoid being invaded and killed by suspected criminals at every interval.

This was contained in a communiqué which was made available to Sunday PUNCH and was signed by the state CAN Chairman, Rev. Fr. Anselm Ologunwa, Secretary, Very Evang. Amos Olomofe, and the Director of Information and Communications of the association, Mr Daisi Ajayi.

According to the statement, the present Nigeria Constitution, which prohibits the use of firearms, should be reviewed, to give room for individuals to carry firearms for self-defence, considering the prevailing insecurity situation in the country.”

While reacting to the terror attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State last Sunday, the Christian Association of Nigeria had called on the Federal Government to enact a law permitting individuals to carry firearms.
