Kingship tussle: Delta monarch security guard kills footballer

A 25 years local football player known as Ogaga, in Agbarho, Ughelli North council area of Delta state has been shot dead by member of Agbarho Task Force vigilante attached to the king on Friday.

A community source, said that Ogaga was among other young men playing football close to the palace when he was shot for allegedly trespassing into the palace of the Agbarho monarch.

According to the report, during the course of the football match, the ball was mistakenly played into the palace premises.

It was gathered the victim was reportedly shot when he was moving closer to the palace to pick the ball.

Another source narrated that there was a fight between the victim (a regular face at the palace) and the security guard before the shooting.

Congress learnt that there is an unresolved kingship tussle which led to a protest about two weeks ago by traditional chiefs of Agbarho Kingdom against alleged imposition of a dethroned traditional ruler.

But it is not clear if Friday’s killing was connected to the kingship tussle.

Meatime, details of the incident is still unknown at the time of filing this report.

Spokesman of the Delta State Police Command, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident but added that there was no football match in the picture.

“They all stay in the palace. I think they know themselves. There is nothing like a ball. They were around the palace and they had a little disagreement. That was what led to the shooting,” Edafe said.

He further said the suspect is in police custody.
