LG elections: 10 political parties sign peace pact in Delta
By Peters Monday, Abuja
In preparation for the upcoming local government election in Delta State, ten political parties have signed a peace accord, committing to a peaceful and violence-free electoral process. The accord was signed at the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) headquarters, in the presence of the State Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda Olufemi, and representatives from other law enforcement agencies and the Inter-Party Advisory Council.
The signatories, including the Peoples Democratic Party, All Progressives Congress, Labour Party, and chairmanship candidates, pledged to conduct themselves with decorum and avoid hate speech, blackmail, and vendetta. DSIEC Chairman, Jerry Agbaike, urged the parties to maintain peace, a value inherent in Delta’s culture, and to seek legal recourse if necessary.
Agbaike emphasized the importance of avoiding violent acts like thuggery and ballot box snatching, and encouraged the parties to accept election results and congratulate each other. The presence of security agencies at the signing ceremony demonstrated their commitment to ensuring a secure and peaceful electoral process.
