NASS To Empower INEC To Takeover LG Elections
By Peters Monday, Abuja
The Chairman of the Senate Services Committee, Senator Sunday Karimi (APC, Kogi West), has disclosed that the National Assembly will soon legislate to transfer the responsibility of conducting local council elections from state electoral bodies to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Speaking in Abuja, Senator Karimi commended President Bola Tinubu for enabling the judiciary to function independently, leading to the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment on financial autonomy for local government areas. He assured that the National Assembly will ensure compliance by state governments and amend the constitution to address contentious issues.
The Senator praised President Tinubu for his courage in returning power to the masses, stating that local governments, if well-operated, will improve the lives of Nigerians. He acknowledged that some state governors may resist but expressed confidence in the President’s commitment to the masses.
Senator Karimi emphasised that the National Assembly will oversee the allocation of revenue from the federal purse to ensure it reached the intended destination. He also hinted at amending the electoral act and the 1999 constitution to ensure credible individuals are elected to local government positions, prioritising grassroots development and accountability.
