The 8th National Youth Games (NYG) commenced in Asaba, Delta State, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasizing the need for strict adherence to rules and regulations. Represented by Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, Tinubu stressed the importance of curbing age cheating, doping, and other malpractices.

Addressing the gathering at the Stephen Keshi Olympic-size Stadium, Tinubu attributed Nigeria’s declining sports success to aging athletes and age cheating. He emphasized discovering and nurturing young talent through the NYG.

“My hope is that sports federations identify talents for future development,” Tinubu said.

The president reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to repositioning sports, highlighting grassroots development investment. He advocated reverting to the original under-17 age limit for participants.

The opening ceremony showcased 6,000 athletes and 1,000 officials from 36 states and the FCT, with Team Delta, the defending champions, leading the parade.

President Tinubu praised Delta State’s hosting, while Governor Sheriff Oborevwori welcomed athletes and officials. Oborevwori highlighted Delta’s sports history and encouraged athletes to defend their title.
