The Nigerian Navy successfully rescued 59 individuals whose vessel encountered turbulent waters near Okpobo River entrance on July 30, 2024. However, the operation resulted in the loss of one naval officer, Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza.

According to Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, Director of Naval Information, the Navy received a distress call from MV AMBIKA 4, a dredging vessel, and promptly deployed a rescue team. Despite challenging conditions, the team managed to rescue all 59 crew members.

The operation involved multiple assets, including interceptor boats, drones, helicopters, and the Nigerian Navy Ship GONGOLA. Lieutenant Commander Gwaza, a combat diver, accidentally fell overboard during the rescue operation and lost his life.

The Nigerian Navy mourns the loss of Lieutenant Commander Gwaza, who risked his life to save others. His sacrifice reflects the risks and dedication of naval personnel in ensuring the safety of Nigeria’s maritime domain.
