Pensioners protest in Delta, demand payment of retirement benefits

Aggrieved retirees of the Delta State Local Government/Primary School Contributory Scheme have protested on Thursday in Asaba, the State capital, demanding for payment of their entitlements.

The angry pensioners who said they have suffered for the past seven years without payment, accused Delta State Government of showing no readiness to pay their entitlements.

It was gathered that the protesting retirees blocked a road to an event centre where the governor was attending a function, chanting with placards which caused unease in the state capital on Thursday.

The angry protesters, who chanted solidarity songs, demanded that the governor should pay their retirement benefits, adding that they were tired of failed promises year after year.

The protest was said to have lasted for hours as some retirees expressed disappointment, noting that some of their colleagues died without receiving their benefits as family members of such deceased retirees were denied access to the accumulated funds.
