Police smash 40 suspected hooligans on post-election violence

The Zamfara State Police Command has apprehended 40 hooligans who went on a rampage of looting and destruction following the announcement of the just concluded governorship elections results.

It was gathered the hoodlums allegedly looted the All Progressives Congress, APC, offices and individual houses belonging mainly to politicians in the state.

State Public Relations officer, PPRO, of the command, SP Mohammed Shehu, who revealed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Gusau, said some of the looted items had been recovered.

The recovered items are 36 bundles of wrappers, eight cushion chairs, three television sets, one 5000-litre tank, one solar panel, six bags of POP cement, one Golf 3 vehicle, two speakers, one caterpillar radiator, two rugs, one freezer, one bundle of armoured cable wire and three window burglary proofs.

Others are one big gate, one office centre table, one centre table drawer, one air conditioner, seven iron rods, four doors, one ceiling fan, four signboard banners of APC, pieces of office curtain, drugs and tablets, three office chairs, bags of rice, cutlasses, knives and sticks.

The PPRO said that it was the state Commissioner of Police, CP Kolo Yusuf, who led the joint police and other security agencies that brought the situation under control.

It was also reported that Area Commanders and DPOs in the state also embarked on a similar exercise in their respective areas to avert escalation.

Shehu added that the arrested suspects would be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction upon completion of the investigation.
