Residents Flee as Unknown Gunmen Wreak Havoc In Bayelsa Community
By Stephen Asaba-ase
The Akamama Community in Southern Ijaw, Bayelsa State, has been thrown into chaos after unknown gunmen in military uniforms invaded the area, destroying properties and displacing residents. This recent attack comes just ten days after a similar incident, leaving the community in fear and uncertainty.
Eyewitnesses report that the gunmen arrived in gunboats, accompanied by pipeline surveillance company workers, and destroyed properties worth millions of naira. Residents, including children, men, and women, were forced to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
Community members, including Elder Amaowei Sunday and Ms. Catherine Allen, have appealed for urgent government intervention to restore peace and order. They criticized the method of invasion, suggesting that the community leadership should have been engaged instead. The community is calling on Governor Douye Diri, stakeholders, and security agencies to address the issue, bring perpetrators to justice, and hold the surveillance contractor accountable to prevent further unrest. The repeated invasions have left the community in dire need of support and intervention to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents.
