Rights Group Condemns Killing of Mine Ogidi, Urges Diligent Prosecution of Officers
By Osaro Michael, Benin
Prominent rights group, the Citizens Rights Concern Enhancement Initiative, popularly known as the Human Rights Protection Congress, has condemned the extrajudicial killing of late Mine Ogidi, describing it as a “gruesome” act that has sparked outrage among the public and human rights advocates.
In a press statement released on Wednesday, the group said the incident had generated “deep concern” over the conduct of some security operatives and the protection of citizens’ fundamental rights.
According to the CRCEI, the police officer identified as Nuhu Usman, also known as “Ogbegbe,” and members of his team alleged to be involved in the killing have been arrested and dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force. The suspects are currently awaiting prosecution.
“While this action does not erase the pain and irreparable loss suffered by the family of the deceased, it is nevertheless a significant step toward accountability and justice,” the statement read.
The group also acknowledged the role of the Area Commander of the Effurun Area Command, ACP Aliyu Shaba, in the investigation. CRCEI noted that Shaba’s team apprehended the individual alleged to have waybilled a pistol from Bayelsa State to the late Ogidi in Delta State.
“Though the tragic incident happened within his Area Command, ACP Aliyu Shaba has over time earned a reputation as a dogged and proactive crime fighter, and we recognize the professionalism demonstrated in ensuring that investigations continue without compromise,” the statement said.
CRCEI reiterated its condemnation of all forms of extrajudicial killings, abuse of power, and violations of citizens’ rights by security personnel. The organization stressed that no individual or institution should operate above the law and that the sanctity of human life must remain paramount in a democratic society.
The group called on relevant authorities to ensure the diligent prosecution of all persons found culpable, adding that “justice must neither be delayed nor denied.”
It also urged social media users to handle sensitive issues responsibly to avoid spreading misinformation that could incite violence and cause further harm.
“The Human Rights Protection Congress remains committed to the defense of human rights, justice, accountability, good governance, and the promotion of responsible policing and law enforcement in line with best practices in Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
