SWUYN Appeals For Aid, Support For Flood Affected Communities

The Society for the Welfare of Unemployed Youths in Nigeria (SWUYN) has called on every well meaning citizen and the Nigerian government to extend a helping hand and a deeply concerned about the recent flood disaster which had ravaged several states in Nigeria, particularly Maiduguri, Borno State, resulting to loss of lives, properties and displacement of businesses in the states.
Severe flooding in Maiduguri, northeastern Nigeria, has resulted in:
– At least 30 deaths
– 400,000 people forced from their homes
– 1 million people affected
– Widespread destruction of homes, vehicles, and livestock
– Fears of waterborne diseases rising
The disaster follows a recent dam collapse in Borno State, submerging a quarter of Maiduguri.
According to a press statement issued by the National president, Comrade Preye V. Tambou on 12th September 2024, “We express our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and stand in solidarity with the affected communities. The devastating impact of this disaster is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of our nation to natural disasters.
Meanwhile, SWUYN President is appealing to the government, corporate organizations, and individuals to provide urgent financial assistance, succour and shelter to displaced persons and affected communities. We also urge the government to take immediate action to address the root causes of flooding and implement measures to prevent future occurrences.
Meanwhile, SWUYN President is in a way offering the following contemporary solutions:
1. Investment in flood control infrastructure and wetland restoration.
2. Implementation of sustainable urban planning and development policies.
3. Provision of climate-resilient housing and infrastructure for affected communities.
4. Support for agricultural insurance schemes to cushion the effects of flood on farmers.
“We believe that with collective efforts, we can mitigate the effects of natural disasters and build a more resilient Nigeria, he added.
