Dangote managers to face arrest over Cement price hike
By Stephen Asaba-ase
The House of Representatives’ Joint Committee has issued an ultimatum to Dangote Cement’s management, threatening arrest if they fail to appear at the next hearing.
This comes after the committee had earlier given a 14-day notice to cement manufacturers to justify the recent price hike. At the Tuesday hearing, Dangote Cement’s absence drew the committee’s ire. The panel is pushing for a price reduction, citing unaffordability for many Nigerians amidst the economic downturn.
They have also summoned the Cement Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and the Central Bank of Nigeria to discuss solutions. Chairman Jonathan Gbefwi accused cement manufacturers of prioritizing profits over citizens’ welfare, warning Dangote Cement that failure to comply with the next hearing date will result in a subpoena and arrest warrant, emphasising that no individual is above the National Assembly.
