Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, the director general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has accused employers of understanding the welfare of corps members.

He made the assertion while given keynote speech on Tuesday, at the 2023 Corps Employer’s Workshop at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Ede, Osun State.

“Most of those who made requests for corps members to be posted to their establishment did not provide accommodation for them and where such was provided, it was always in deplorable conditions unfit for human habitation,” the NYSC Director General, who was resented by the Deputy Director, Corps Development, South West, Ella Williams, said.

Some employers of corpers conspire with them to skip work, which frequently endangers their lives.

“Many firms work with the people they have posted, allowing them to travel whenever they want. In fact, there is evidence that some of the companies split the allowance paid to these kids by the federal government to allow them to leave their primary assignment location.

“Unfortunately, this truancy has cost us several of them. Last week, two people died in an accident while traveling illegally, and one person had an accident in Kogi State.

The workshop, with the theme “Optimizing the productivity of corp members through enhanced welfare and security during the service year,” was organized in accordance with the strategy to link talented corp members with employers who share the NYSC vision of fostering personal and professional growth, according to Ndoma Agbor Obim, the state coordinator of the NYSC.

Prior to the session, Moshood Olagunju, the Osun state commissioner for youth, asked attendees to use it to better grasp their responsibilities for the welfare of the corp members.
