BREAKING: INEC Releases Final Ward Delineation for Warri Federal Constituency, Creates 2 Additional Constituencies
By Monday Peters, Abuja
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final outcome of its ward delineation and constituency sharing exercise for the Warri Federal Constituency in Delta State, creating 20 wards and restructuring six state constituencies.
According to the result published, the exercise produced nine wards for the Urhobo ethnic group, eight for the Itsekiri, and three for the Ijaw in Warri South. The new structure is expected to take effect ahead of future elections in the area.
The delineation also formalized six state constituencies within the federal constituency: Warri North 1, Warri North 2, Warri South 1, Warri South 2, Warri South-West 1, and Warri South-West 2. INEC said the exercise was carried out to ensure fair representation and equitable distribution of political wards in line with the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act.
The delineation in Warri has been a long-standing issue due to disputes over population, territory, and representation among the Urhobo, Itsekiri, and Ijaw communities. The commission had earlier conducted fieldwork and stakeholder engagements across the three local government areas before arriving at the final structure.
INEC officials stated that the new ward and constituency map would address historical imbalances and improve access to representation for all groups in the constituency. The commission urged political actors and communities to maintain peace and cooperate with the process.
Stakeholders in Warri are expected to study the details of the report and make submissions where necessary before the structure is used for elections.
