Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has expressed his support for local government financial autonomy, as ruled by the Supreme Court. He assured that the N14 billion fund accruing to the 25 local councils in the state for the past three months is intact and waiting for the incoming elected council chairmen to take over.

Oborevwori made this known while speaking to journalists after casting his vote during the local government election in his Osubi community Ward polling center, Okpe LGA. He emphasized that Delta State does not tamper with local government funds and has always augmented them.

The governor described the local government elections as peaceful, free, and fair, and expressed confidence in his party’s victory. He also assured that the elected chairmen would be sworn in by early next week.

However, Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, representing Delta South Senatorial District, accused the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) of withholding sensitive materials, including result sheets and ballot papers, and colluding with the ruling PDP to manipulate the electoral process. He called for a constitutional amendment to transfer the power to constitute state electoral commissions from state governors to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
