Ogun State has officially joined the ranks of rice-producing states in Nigeria, following the successful harvest of a 200-hectare rice farm in Magboro, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area. The farm, initiated by the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project and supported by the World Bank, aims to drive economic growth and development in the state.

Governor Abiodun flagged off the harvest, highlighting the project’s potential to foster economic development, create jobs, and improve livelihoods within communities. The farm, with a yield of 1,400 metric tons of milled rice per cycle, has the potential to generate N1 billion in revenue for the 200 farmers involved.

The governor announced plans to scale up the project to 2,000 hectares, which could generate N30 billion in revenue and make significant strides towards realizing the vision of making Ogun State the food basket of Nigeria.

The project aligns with the federal government’s resolve to eradicate poverty and hunger by providing affordable food to Nigerians. It also addresses animal husbandry and provides critical support to farmers, including advanced agricultural techniques, access to quality seeds, modern irrigation systems, and technical training.

The state government has pledged to provide additional support, including solar pumps and modern drones for pest control, to ensure the project’s success.
