Peter Obi Reportedly Wins NDC Presidential Ticket with 45 Million Votes
By Monday Peters, Abuja
ABUJA – Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has reportedly secured the presidential ticket of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) after polling 45 million votes in the party’s primary election.
According to early reports from party sources on Tuesday, Obi emerged as the clear winner of the NDC presidential primary, defeating other aspirants by a wide margin. The reported figure of 45 million votes would mark the highest number recorded in any party primary in Nigeria’s democratic history.
The NDC has not yet released an official statement or a detailed breakdown of the results. Party officials said a formal declaration and handover of the certificate of return would be made once the collation and verification process is concluded.
If confirmed, the outcome positions Obi as the NDC’s flagbearer for the next presidential election. Obi, who ran on the Labour Party platform in 2023 and placed third in the official INEC results, has remained a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape, drawing significant youth and urban support.
Political analysts have described the reported turnout as unprecedented, noting that it exceeds the total votes cast in the 2023 presidential election. They caution that the figure requires verification through the party’s official channels and independent observation of the primary process.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) does not oversee party primaries directly, leaving the conduct and announcement of results to the political parties themselves under the Electoral Act.
As of press time, Obi’s media team had not issued a statement on the reported victory. Further details are expected once the NDC releases its official communique.
