The Senate has promised to mandate election results to be transmitted electronically by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

According to the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, this would improve the electoral process in the country.

Senator Sharafadeen Alli, the committee’s chairman, stated this in Channels TV on Tuesday that the electoral umpire is not required by law to broadcast results online.

He did, however, guarantee that a law resulting from an amendment to the current law will be passed soon.

“That is one of the things that we are going to do,” he declared. The court has ruled that INEC is not required by the current law to upload results.

“Nevertheless, going forward, it will be required.”

“Most Nigerians were disappointed when the IReV didn’t work, so we are looking at the development and improvement of technology, but moving forward, we will try to ensure INEC does something about that,” he said.
