3rd Phase Amnesty Chairman Ogidigba Appeals to Edo Govt to Present Staff of Office to Ijaw Traditional Rulers
By Osaro Michael, Benin
The Amnesty Phase 3 National Chairman, Gen. Godstime Ogidigba, has appealed to the Edo State Government to approve the staff of office for traditional rulers of the five Ijaw clans in the state. In the appeal addressed to His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, Executive Governor of Edo State, Gen. Ogidigba said formal recognition of the Ijaw monarchs is necessary for inclusive governance and effective administration at the grassroots.
Gen. Ogidigba expressed concern over the absence of Ijaw traditional rulers in meetings of the Edo State Traditional Council, describing it as an omission that undermines the contributions of Ijaw communities to the state’s development. He noted that Ijaw areas contribute significantly through oil and gas production, timber logging, agricultural products, and other natural resources. According to him, granting the staff of the office would ensure Ijaw traditional rulers can participate fully in the state’s traditional institution.
The Amnesty Phase 3 Chairman also argued that recognized traditional institutions play a key role in addressing insecurity and resolving minor inter-ethnic conflicts at the community level. He said approving the staff of the office for Ijaw rulers would strengthen stability in the riverine areas of Edo State.
Gen. Ogidigba pledged the continued support of Ijaw stakeholders for the Okpebholo administration and expressed hope for a favorable consideration of the appeal.
