Telecom Blackout Threat as Diesel Supply Dispute Deepens

Nigeria’s telecommunications sector is facing a potential nationwide service disruption as a dispute between diesel suppliers and telecom tower operators intensifies. Tower operators, who rely heavily on diesel generators to power network infrastructure due to the country’s unreliable electricity supply, say fuel suppliers have hiked prices and threatened to halt deliveries over unpaid bills. Several operators warn that without a quick resolution, connectivity in parts of the country could be severely affected within days.

Industry experts stress that the dispute highlights the fragile nature of Nigeria’s telecom infrastructure, which depends on diesel for over 70% of its power needs. A prolonged standoff could disrupt voice calls, internet services, and mobile banking platforms, causing significant economic and social disruption. The Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has urged government intervention to mediate between the parties, warning that millions of Nigerians risk being cut off from essential communication services if the crisis is not resolved swiftly.
