BREAKING: Security Forces Disperse #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protesters in Abuja

By Monday Peters, Abuja
A combined team of security and defense operatives forcefully dispersed protesters gathered to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in Abuja today.
The protesters, led by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, converged near the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) headquarters in Maitama, chanting “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now.” However, their demonstration was cut short when security personnel fired tear gas canisters and gunshots into the air, causing the crowd to scatter in panic.
According to eyewitnesses, many protesters were manhandled, and some were arrested, including Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor. The security forces also deployed barricades, causing traffic congestion and disrupting the commute for many residents.
The protest was part of a nationwide campaign to pressure the Federal Government to release Kanu, who has been in detention since June 2021. Despite the government’s warnings, the protesters vowed to proceed with their demonstration, citing their constitutional right to peaceful assembly as Nigerian citizens.
The security forces’ actions have sparked concerns about the erosion of civil liberties and the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.
