Tension has risen in parts of Lagos following the killing of a suspected cult leader in the Iponri area of Surulere.

The victim, identified as Agali, was reportedly a leading figure of the Buccaneers (BAN) cult group and was known to be influential within the Surulere axis, particularly around the Shitta/Akere area.

According to reports, the incident occurred on the night of April 11, 2026. Agali was said to have been shot while driving in the Iponri area. Details surrounding the attack remain unclear, but sources suggest it may be linked to ongoing rivalries.

Some accounts indicate that the deceased had recently been involved in local political alignments ahead of upcoming elections in Surulere, reportedly backing a candidate different from a widely known incumbent. However, these claims have not been officially confirmed.

Members of the Buccaneers group have alleged that a rival cult group was responsible for the attack. The development has heightened tension in the area, with fears of possible retaliatory violence.

As of Sunday morning, there was a heavy security presence in the area, with multiple police vehicles reportedly deployed to maintain order and prevent further unrest.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident.
