BANGLADESH: PM HASINA FLEES, MILITARY TAKES CONTROL AMID PROTEST
By Peters Monday, Abuja
Dhaka, Bangladesh – In a dramatic turn of events, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has fled the country amid escalating protests and violence, marking the end of her 15-year rule. The military has seized control, declaring its intention to establish an interim government.
The protests, which began over a contentious quota scheme, quickly spiralled into demands for Hasina’s resignation, resulting in at least 320 deaths since early July. The military, led by Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman, has vowed to address injustices and end the violence.
Neighboring India has confirmed Hasina’s departure, while the international community expresses concern over the situation. Michael Kugelman, director of the South Asia Institute, warns of a “major vacuum” and “uncharted territory” in the wake of Hasina’s departure.
As the military seeks to establish an interim setup and ease uncertainty, protesters continue to demand accountability for alleged injustices. The coming days are critical, with the future of Bangladesh hanging in the balance.
