By Stephen Asaba-ase
Following the demolition of buildings in the FCT, the residents of Ruga, a settlement along Airport Road, Abuja has took to the streets on Friday to demonstrate against FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Congress gathered that Wike had previously ordered “Operation Sweep,” to razed Ruga and other communities within the capital territory to clear perceived criminal activities.
Meanwhile, the protest is Led by a renowned human right lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, along side with Vincent Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMark, adding that the demolition was carried out with malicious intent.
However, the human right Lawyer expressed concern, saying that the task force destroyed many houses and razed property worth millions of naira.
He admonished President Bola Tinubu to consider the situation of the poor masses who had been driven from their homes in Borno and other northern states due to the insecurity in the region.
Adeyanju also stated that “There is no reason for this demolition adding that “We are using this medium to call on the attention of Mr president to address the challenges of the displaced residents that are passing through this trying times.
“Most of the residents here were forced out of their homes in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe due to insecurity.
“Most of them are artisans trying to make ends meet. These demolitions are uncalled for, and Mr President needs to act promptly to avoid inhuman treatment and plundering the people into unimaginable destruction.
“We are sounding a severe warning to those in government that are making peaceful change unavoidable, however, only makes violent change achievable, the poor should be allowed to breath.
“Tinubu should call Wike to order and stop him from razing down people’s homes and reallocating the land to rich people.
“There is no justification for demolishing these homes and allocating them to the rich. There is no overriding public interest here because the community is far from the main road.”
On his part, Otse stated: “This is strange. The reprisal of this will have a resultant effect on Abuja. This area that has been demolished is not closed to the main road. These people have been rendered homeless amidst the current hardship faced by the people, he added.
