By Jennifer Kpaidia
The city of Asaba, the Delta State capital was brought to a standstill today as protesters took to the streets to demand an end to bad governance. The protest, which was peaceful, saw shops, businesses, markets, and offices closed, with the city partially lockdown.
The protesters, who gathered at the popular Interbau Roundabout, marched through Nnebisi Road to the Ogbeogonogo market, despite initial attempts by police and soldiers to restrict their movement.
As a precautionary measure, banks were closed, with employees advised not to report to work. The Delta State House of Assembly Complex was also closed, while the Warri South Local Government Council secretariat and related health centers and markets remained operational.
Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, applauded the protesters for their peaceful conduct, saying “The protest has been peaceful, and we commend the protesters for their maturity.”
The #EndBadGovernance protest is part of a nationwide movement calling for an end to bad governance, corruption, and human rights abuses in Nigeria.
