Ozobo Commends Delta CP For Arrest Of Cops Over Warri Killing, Demands Prosecution, Dismissal Of Erring Officers
•‘This Is Complete Murder’ – Activist Says Police Have No Right to Kill Arrested Suspects
By Monday Peters, Abuja
Rights activist, Amb. Comrade Ozobo Austin, has commended the Delta State Commissioner of Police for apprehending officers allegedly responsible for the killing of a young man in Warri, while demanding their immediate prosecution and dismissal from the force.
In a statement on Tuesday Ozobo described the incident as “a complete murder act,” stressing that the law forbids security agents from executing suspects after arrest.
“The law is explicit. When a suspect is arrested, not killed during battle, the police or any security agents have lost their rights to terminate his or her life. Whether he should die by firing squad or be imprisoned becomes the business of a competent court,” Ozobo stated.
Ozobo said the viral video of a young man caught with a waybill containing a pistol, the young man was shouting he was only asked to come and pick the waybill, but the police officers attached to Ekpan Division hurriedly shot and killed him without investigation. “This is a bad job. The police have a question to answer. The officers must not be allowed to go unpunished”, he added.
He urged the Commissioner of Police to ensure a thorough investigation, insisting that the erring officers “must be brought to book to serve justice and serve as a deterrent to such miscreants camouflaging under the euphoria of a police officer.”
Ozobo said the arrest of the officers was timely and commendable, but prosecution and dismissal were necessary to restore public confidence in the police.
Efforts to reach the Delta State Police Command for comments on the status of the investigation were ongoing as of press time.
