Six residents of Oko, Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State have lost their lives, while five others sustained varying degrees of injury in a rainstorm that occurred in the Area on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, in Oko village in Oshimili South when a red-deviled rainstorm claimed six lives in the community.

Congress learnt that a 10years old boy returning from the church in the Okotumi community in Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area of the State where the state government is equally addressing the issue of erosion and flooding was swept away.

The young boy, yet to be identified, was swept away by the rainstorm which was accompanied by a windstorm.

The state Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, in a news briefing said five others who sustained various degrees of injuries were being treated at the hospital.

He said a collapsed structure in the area during the rainstorm led to the death of the six persons, adding that one other person who was critically injured, was being treated at the Asaba Specialist Hospital and that the five others who sustained various injuries were already in stable condition.

“It is quite disturbing and unfortunate. It is our prayer that God will grant the deceased eternal rest even as we pray to God to comfort the bereaved families and grant them the fortitude to bear their loss.”

He said the State Government has coordinated rescue efforts to recover the deceased young boy.
