Rights group demands justice over brutal murder of Asiayei, seeks Diri, IG, CP Bayelsa intervention
By Stephen Asaba-ase
The Ijaw Youth Leaders of Thoughts urgently demand justice for the senseless killing of Mr. Benalayefa Asiayei, a 40-year-old man brutally shot dead by a reckless police officer over a mere N200 bribe.
This was contained in a statement signed by the President of the group, Comrade Jackson Agbor and others on Wednesday afternoon.
The statement reads, “We call on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Igbetokun, Governor Senator Douye Diri, and the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police to take immediate and decisive action to bring the culprit to book.
Asiayei, a valued member of society from Ayakoromo in Delta State, was residing in Yenagoa when he was tragically killed by a member of the Operation Doo akpo police team. “This deplorable act had not only robbed a family of their loved one but had also eroded trust in law enforcement agencies”, the statement reads.
“We implore the authorities to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice, apprehend and prosecute the officer responsible, and ensure transparency and accountability throughout the investigation. We demand justice not just for Asiayei and his family but to reaffirm our faith in the rule of law and the principle that no one is above it.
“Our hearts ache for Asiayei’s family, and we stand with them in their sorrow. Let us honor his memory by ensuring such a tragedy never occurs again. Justice delayed is justice denied, and we await prompt action from the authorities to address this grievous wrong”, the group averred.
