By Stephen Asaba-ase
On July 19,2024 representatives from the Initiative for Social Rights Concerns and Advancement (ISRCA) and family members of Miss Rukevwe H. John met with the management of Delta State University, Abraka, to discuss the welfare of Miss John, who was shot by a trigger-happy police officer.
The meeting, held with the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof Njoseh, representing the Vice Chancellor, Prof Andy Egwunyenga, acknowledged the university’s support for Miss John’s care and attention since the incident. The family expressed concerns about the lack of engagement with the road construction company that employed the police officers involved.
ISRCA and the family appealed to the university to reach out to the relevant authorities to ensure Miss John’s welfare and compensation for the damages she sustained. They also called on the Delta State Government and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to intervene and prevent the need for litigation.
Miss John, who survived three bullet wounds, has undergone surgeries and had parts of her intestine removed and mended. The parties are seeking utmost care and support for her recovery and compensation for the damages.
