The National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), United States of America (USA), has told the Nigerian Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio to resign over poor management of the business of the upper chamber.

Group said Akpabio, who President Bola Ahmed Tinubu imposed as Senate President, had completely subordinated his colleagues under the executive and undermined the independence and integrity of the Nigerian senate.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by Mr. Lloyd Ukwu, the executive director of NADECO USA, accused Akpabio of exhibiting complete disregard for the Standing Rules of the Senate with regard to the order of business, lively debates during plenary, and meticulous examination of executive messages and bills.

Following his abysmal leadership, Ukwu asked senators to immediately begin the impeachment process against Akpabio “for making the upper chamber a laughing stock through naivety, immaturity, and eagerness to please the executive, irrespective of the repercussions of his actions on the Senate as an institution and democratic governance in Nigeria.”

“Akpabio is fond of delaying announcements from the President that are meant to be read during announcement time until the very end of plenary, as he recently did when he announced the President’s final three ministerial nominees toward the end of plenary,” the speaker remarked.

“Only recently, Senators Mohammed Ali Ndume (APC – Borno South) and Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo (SDP – Nasarawa South), the Chief Whip of the Senate, publicly accused Akpabio of not giving senators enough time to question and examine bills, particularly money bills, and threatened to hold him accountable for quickly passing significant legislation and granting executive requests.

Ukwu maintained that NADECO USA would have no choice but to organize its members in the USA and Nigerians in the diaspora for a massive action to ensure that Akpabio vacates office should he refused to resign or the Senate fail to impeach him.
