In a bid to spare road users of catastrophe Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called for an urgent rehabilitation of the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta route.

He made this call at the Yewa Cultural Festival’s big finale in Ogun State, where he had just been appointed Aare Fiwagboye of Yewa territory.

The Senate President, who recently travelled from Lagos to Ilaro in Ogun State over the weekend, eloquently detailed the poor state of federal highways and claimed that he had to fight through hours of traffic to get there.

Additionally, he pledged that the federal government would work with the governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, to make sure that both the federal and state highways along that route reopened to traffic.

“I made the choice to go down the Lagos-Abeokuta, Papalanto-Ilaro road on the way here in order to feel your suffering from the traffic.

“Two tankers fell on the Papalanto-Ilaro route, and I was stuck in traffic there for nearly two hours. I feel very sorry for you. I experienced what you individuals experience every day.

“I am offering Governor Abiodun the backing of the Senate for the renovation of these crucial highways.

“I was resolved to go the same route as you. I have now witnessed what you have been witnessing. I declare that your roads are finished as of today.

“ With only five local governments, Yewaland has the most industries of any local government in Nigeria.

“Due to the wear and strain on your roads, we understand the necessity of using the best team of contractors. We will collaborate with our brother Dapo Abiodun, I can promise you of that. Your lives will never again be the same.

“The list of things you want us to perform in this place will be given to the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

The governor noted that it took him three hours to travel from Abeokuta to Ilaro and noted that the state’s efforts to ensure the transfer of the road had not been successful.

Abiodun added that his administration’s discussions on the reconstruction of the Abeokuta-Olorunda-Imeko and Abeokuta-Iborro-Ilaro roads are nearly finished.
