National
Focus on LG development – Adeshina

To ensure that goals for sustained national growth are met, the Federal Government has been encouraged to focus significantly more on strengthening the local government structure and operations.
The recommendation was made on Sunday in an interview with Newsmen by Mr. Ade Adeshina, the director general of the UK-based Diaspora Grassroots for Better Governance in Nigeria.
According to him, the government’s main goal is to ensure improved living circumstances for its residents, regardless of where they reside in the nation, after safeguarding the protection of people and property.
He claimed that many Local Government Areas (LGAs) had not experienced democracy’s benefits.
He pointed out that weak governance had particularly hurt rural populations.
“Simple road systems cannot be constructed to the necessary requirements.
“Local government council members lack the necessary oversight and, in most circumstances, are unable to control the public tempo.
“Nigeria has a wealth of natural resources and human resources, hence it is concerning how the country is now developing.
“According to Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the former premier of the now-defunct Western Region, “Nigeria should not be a poor nation given its vast resources,” Adeshina remarked.
Adeshina continued by saying that the issues faced by common Nigerians had been made worse by the elimination of gasoline subsidies and the high inflation rate that followed.
