Rights Lawyer Calls for Immediate Suspension of Nationwide Protests
By Peters Monday
Lagos, Nigeria – Renowned human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has urged Nigerians to immediately suspend the ongoing nationwide hunger protests, citing concerns over the loss of lives and properties.
In a statement released on Friday, Adegboruwa appealed to protesters to withdraw from demonstration grounds and engage in meaningful dialogue with the federal government. He expressed condolences to the families of security personnel and protesters who have lost their lives during the protests.
Adegboruwa, who is one of the lawyers representing the Take It Back Movement, a group participating in the protests, emphasized the need to avoid further casualties and losses. He also called on President Bola Tinubu to directly address the nation and engage with protesters through their representatives.
The lawyer’s plea comes as the protests enter their second day, with reports of violence, looting, and vandalism in various parts of the country. Adegboruwa had previously written to the Inspector General of Police, requesting police coverage for protesters during the planned #EndBadGovernance protest on July 26, 2024.
